Orofacial Pain (OFP) is the specialty of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis, management, and treatment of pain disorders of the jaw, mouth, face, and associated regions. The specialty of OFP is dedicated to the evidence-based understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, etiology, prevention, and treatment of these disorders, as well as improving access to interdisciplinary patient care. These disorders include — but are not limited to — temporomandibular muscle and joint (TMJ) disorders, jaw movement disorders, neuropathic and neurovascular pain disorders, headache, and sleep disorders.
What is TMD?
The joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull is known as the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). This joint is located in front of your ear on both sides of your head. When it does not work correctly or causes pain, doctors use the term TMD, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. Problems in the joints or in nearby muscles may cause TMD. Your doctor can provide more details about your diagnosis and treatment options.
